NWOBHM - The New Wave of British Heavy Metal

The new wave of British heavy metal or some may name it NWOBHM is a branch of heavy metal beginning in the late 70's. Of course a lot of the metal bands that had been involved had been Britian. NWOBHM was an answer to the declining popularity of early heavy metal pioneers like Black Sabbath in which the musicians often toned down the blues influence and as an alternative went for quick, usually punk influenced sounds. This brought in fast guitar solos and songs about fantasy themes. New Wave of British Heavy Metal was the beginning of the powerful attitude with heavy metal. The hottest look that went hand and hand with NWOBHM was lengthy wavy hair and dark black leather-based clothing.

The band that stands on the highest of NWOBHM is Iron Maiden. Even although there were other bands like Judas Priest and Saxon included within the NWOBHM creation, Iron Maiden is simply essentially the most well known. When NWOBHM started to decline there was one other style moving up, glam metal. Wich the rising reputation of glam metal, NWOBHM slowing disappeared. But not a lot after glam disappeared with the trend of thrash metal.

Even with the decline of recognition, the internet has stored NWOBHM alive. The web, YouTube and other media sources proceed to maintain NWOBHM around. New Wave of British Heavy Metal started completely different genres and will all the time be the building blocks to one thing great.

People might have ignored the genre but you can't deny the ability that was left behind it. Even the original bands that began all of it still continue to promote out concert events and promote merchandise.

There was also King Crimson and Rush that started to mix some of these other elements into their music. With these bands scratching the surface, there was really only three bands that took progressive metal to the next level. Queensryche, Dream Theater and Fates Warning all had the same type of expertise in metal music. Each of these bands brought something new to the table for progressive metal. Most of these bands had some rock influences and jazz that gave them a push to become something great.

Progressive Metal into the Community

Progressive metal started to become more popular in the metal community in the 1990's. This was all because of Queensryche's Silent Lucidity, which became a huge hit in stores, on the radio and on MTV. Other progressive bands started to come out and became more mainstream after this explosion of popularity. Band like Ayreon, Symphony X, Opeth, Threshold, Pain of Salvation and Tool all started to come out and make a name for them. All of these new progressive bands all had a different style and inspiration for their music.

New Bands Merge Up

More and more bands started to go with this trend. Disillusion, Dark Suns and Conscience started to become the new comers of progressive metal and were greatly influenced by the "fathers" of progressive metal. Most progressive metal bands have always looked up to Green Carnation, Tool, Opeth, Pain of Salvation and Anathema.

Folk Metal Does Not Include Wenches and Mead

Starting in the 1990's, Folk Metal was created by a British band called Skyclad. They used heavy metal style with foklish instruments and singing. This genre of metal music has began to go mainstream and approach the marketing. More and more bands and styles are generating more folk metal. Folk metal bands are very popular in the European market. The northern regions are where the musicians create their music and lyrics from inspiration from the tradition tales and history. A lot of folk metal style tends to fall into pagan beliefs and romanticism culture.

There is also some other styles of folk metal or subgenres of folk metal, Viking metal, Celtic metal and Oriental metal. Cruachan was a pioneer of Celtic metal when we was experimenting with folk music of Ireland and put some traditional black metal elements into the music. Primordial and Waylander help make the transition to folk metal.

This made Bathory style the standard for all Viking metal. Powerful ballads are combined with paganism and mythology in Viking metal. Viking themed lyrics have been enjoyed in all mainstreams and popularity of metal music. Amon Amarth has produced some of these Viking lyrics and placed them in death metal. A Swedish Viking metal band called Ensiferium has put them on top of the list for Viking metal.

Folk metal themes are often strong shows of masculinity and nationalism. There are a few bands that label themselves part of the NSBM or Nationalism Socialism Black Metal. These are usually not very popular or accepted by the metal community. Most bands will have publicly denounced racism within their music because of this.

Folk metal really grabs a hold of their fans with different festivals and concerts focused on pleasing their fans. Notably Paganfest, Noctis Valkyries and Heathen Fest Metal Festival. Quick Guide to Death Metal

Quick Guide to Death Metal

In all the genres of metal music there is one called Death Metal. This is really another branch within the heavy metal genre. Within death metal, it too has different categories. The style of death metal has different elements, like deep growling vocals, double bass drumming, heavy distorted guitars and various tempo changes with complex song structures.

The Journey of Death Metal

Thrash metal was the starting point for death metal. In the mid 1980s there was bands starting to brach out to the public. Slayer, Kreator and Celtic Frost were some of the first bands that fit into this genre of music. Celtic Fronts is know as the father of death metal, he was a member of Celtic Frost. This genre has been know to have complex music. With snarls, grunts and growl vocals will overlap the fast tempo and complex structure of death metal music. The deep growling vocals have been a trait of death metal music.

Death Metal and the Devil

Death metal has been known to be part of the black arts. This has been true in some black metal bands, because people will take their distortion singing and musical style and tag it to the devil. Their songs and albums have just as much meaning as any other genre of music. They may wright about a life experience they had. Or about love, hate or any type of emotions they might be feeling at the time.

Death Metal Categories

Here are some other sections of death metal.

Melodic Death Metal

A growled vocal, double bass drumming and crazy guitar riffs fits this at home with the death metal community. Bands like At the Gates, In Flames and Dark Tranquillity have made this famous.

Technical Death Metal

Death metal with a weird time signature and coming from a jazzy progressive rock would be Technical Death Metal. You will find bands such as Edge of Sanity, Cryptosy and Opeth.

Doom Death

This genre of death metal music will have a slower tempo than other death metal genres, keeping the same elements from both doom metal and death metal.

Blackened Death Metal

Bands like Behemoth, Blasphemy and Zyklon have brought out this fairly new subgenre of music called Blackened Death Metal. These bands have both features from the black metal world and the death metal world, so they called it Blackened Death Metal.

Goregrind

Insane speed and intensity makes Goregrind and Deathgrind music. Usually keeping the deep death growl vocals in their music, bands like Circle of Death Children, Brujeria and Cephalic Carnage are keeping it alive.

Deathcore

Deathcore is a break off of Goregrind / Deathgrind but has also incorporated some death metal elements. This style has very fast drumming, double bass, low down tuned guitars and growled vocals. They like to change up their melodic riffs, breakdowns and screamed vocals. Bands like Suicide Silence, Salt the Wound and Job for a Cowboy have designed this genre.

Future of Death Metal

The future of death metal is looking bright. There are many bands that are getting closer to mainstream and the popularity of them is growing. You will probably see more and more death metal in the close future.

Thrash Metal Genre

In the metal community there is another genre called thrash metal. Metal with fast drum beats, guitar riffs and aggressive vocals is known as thrash metal. This genre is all about having fast drum, guitars and loud singing. Most of this music was brought up by "The Big Four." Metallica, Anthrax, Slayer and Megadeth are the four bands that fit into this category. Starting in the late 70's and early 80's these pioneers began sculpting thrash metal as we know it today.

Beginning in the late 1970's and early 1980's there was a huge wave of British metal bands. This is what created a more aggressive and fast tempo of metal, coming off of punk rock and hardcore metal. Thrash metal introduced more distortion and bass, complex riffs and solos and more double kick bass drum and loud vocals.

Trash metal is a combination of long intros, long solos and long endings. These bands used a technique called shredding when playing their solos. Shredding is a way to play notes quickly during your solos. Using techniques like hammer-ons and pull-offs. For the metal community and having these new styles being played was a great movement for the typical styles.

Thrash metal broke open in 1984 when Metallica's "Ride the Lighting" , Anthrax's "Fistful of Metal" , Overkill's "Self Titled" and Slayer's "Haunting the Chapel" was released. These different bands all had their own style and interpretation of thrash music. This brought new talent and techniques to thrash metal. Thrash Metal was on the rise after this, the metal community had brought it in and it started to grow.

Through a couple of decades and into the 90's there was a small change in the music and in the bands. The same bands were still rocking the thrash metal and were releasing very successful albums, but the style had alternated. Band slowing down and changing their styles brought Metallica's release of "Load" and "Reload." These two albums were more of a hard rock than a thrash metal. Not only did Metallica take a different route with their music, so did Megadeth. Megadeth's album "Countdown to Extinction" was a different style than their earlier releases.

To the year 2000 thrash metal isn't as popular as it was in the early 80's. Gama Bomb, Municipal Waste and Evile are some bands that are still pumping out the thrash metal. With new bands coming out in trash metal, Metallica, Slayer, Anthrax and Megadeth still lead the way. With popularity falling for thrash metal, it still isn't going anywhere anytime soon with "The Big Four" still rocking.

Nu Metal Music Genre

This sub category of heavy metal is known as Nu Metal. Nu Metal has been known to blend different styles of music elements and styles into their music, such as Grunge, Hip Hop and Punk. Band in nu metal mostly used aggressive vocals and melodic singing in their music.

Spin magazine featured this style of metal music as "new metal." As time went on and the genre expanded the "new metal" term was changed to "nu metal." It was presented at the end of the movie "Get Thrashed." Nu metal started in the early 90's and peaked in the start of the year 2000.

Nu Metal's popularity began to rise in 1998 when Korn's third album "Follow the Leader" sold for 9 million copies worldwide. Many metal bands began to rise up and be noticed. After the doors were opened for the nu metal community, nu metal bands came out to the public.

The community grew and so did the nu metal bands. With Korn's "Follow the Leader" album being so successful, Coal Chamber, Staind and Limp Bizkit started growing in the nu metal music community. Most of these bands come out of LA, California, like Spineshank, Coal Chamber and Static-X. The popularity of the nu metal community on the rise, bands like Limp Bizkit, Disturbed, Soufly, Slipknot, Sevendust and Godsmack started to become more and more successful. All of these bands have had the opportunity to play in huge metal tours like Family Values Tour, Lollapalooza, Ozzfest. The biggest tour for the nu metal bands was the 30th anniversary of Woodstock.

The number of bands grew with time in the nu metal genre. Linkin Park, Papa Roach, P.O.D. and System of a Down all became big hits, pushing most of their albums to platinum. In 2001 nu metal reached its highest peak when it was considered the most popular metal music to listen to in America. Record tables were signing a majority of nu metal bands that approached them. With this explosion of new bands, it ended with bad quality of nu metal music.

Into the early years of 2000 nu metal's popularity died down and bands that started the wave wasn't selling their new albums as well as their previous ones. Nu metal came down from being at the top and metal lovers moved to a pop and emo punk metal. Most nu metal bands are still playing a similar style of music and staying in the genre, others have moved on.

Black Metal Music Missed Understood

This has grown from the roots of old old school thrash metal in waves, this is frequently misunderstood music genre. There are many different metal bands that are included in this genre. This music has been know as a outlet for personal, religious or culture struggles, usual appleals to misanthropic and disillusioned kids.. This group has aligned themselves with National Socialism and have devoted crimes of murder and church burnings.

Black Metal Beliefs

The most popular Black Metal group is Mayhem and VargVikernes. The year 1993 Vikernes was engaged in the homicide of owner of label Deathlike Silence Øystein Aarseth and was found guilty. Impacting as it may have been, the anti-religious and Nazi views of Vikernes should not be broken as an expression of the thoughts of the musical genre as a whole. With any culture, you will find in black metal the conflicts, thoughts and beliefs.

Variants in Black Metal Music

Pioneered primarily by group such as Bathory and Cruachan, Viking lore and mythology has had a large affect on the black metal scene. These so called "folk" and "viking" metal bands often use instruments that leave from the typical norms and opt instead to use more traditional folk instruments to compliment the common electric guitar, drums, and bass. Ambient, symphonic and doom metal have been know as other variants of typical black metal. Groups have pushed with other music like old 80's punk movement (crust) gothic and even industrial influences.

The Black Metal Impression

Black metal will proceed to develop as long as there are fans and a world to express themselves, for the band and for the fans. Glamorized or demonized black metal has had a lasting impression on the metal genre for indivdualism. With metal bands such as Venom and Celtic Front to the present and future. Black metal will become stronger, more shocking and will continue to be experimental.

What I love about Metal is it just empowers me. Whenever I'm having a bad day, I listen to it and suddenly everything's just fine.

It's my best Friend...It's my LIFE !!

In fact, I don't mind going on record saying that if it wasn't for Metal...I probably would not have been alive today. THAT is the extent to which it is important to me.

I have said enough...but it just felt good to say it.

This is true, there are so many subgenres in one genre! But some people think it all sounds the same, when the subgenres can be vastly different.

My favourites are Finntroll and Equilibrium, gotta love metal you can dance and headbang to! Plus some melodic death metal like Mnemic, One-Way Mirror and Scar Symmetry.

I will check some of the bands out that you mentioned. Thanks for the cool article - good read.
